Erik Butterworth - Original Compositions

Last updated: Dec 9, 2019

This page provides scores and audio for my recent piano compositions, which are (roughly) in the style of J. S. Bach. The compositions are listed in chronological order, so the later ones in each group (also those marked with an asterisk) tend to be a bit better. Audio is available for almost all compositions. Click on the composition name to see the (PDF format) score. Audio controls are located at the bottom left corner of score. The audio recordings are not yet perfect, but give a reasonable feel what's going on.

The pieces below resulted from my recent counterpoint studies which are documented in here: Counterpoint Studies

Two Part Inventions

These are short compositions (about 2 pages) in two voices built by elaborating a motive (simple melodic idea). Further information on inventions may be found here.

Little Pieces in Three Voices

These are trifles (about 1 page) written to explore the mechanics of writing in 3 voices.

Fugues

These are moderate length pieces (3-4 pages), usually in 3 or 4 voices, built by elaborating a subject (short melodic idea). The subject may be similar to an invention's motive, but the elaboration is usually significantly more complex. Further information on fugues may be found here.

Suite in D

This is a set of short pieces similar in spirit to Bach's Partitas and his English and French suites for clavier.

* Indicates pieces somewhat better than average (IMO).
